Taking Something Old & Making It New!

Something that I love to do is upcycle items when making hats, recycling of fabric, buttons, broaches, jewellery etc. When mum asked if I’d like to use grannies’ hat that she’d worn to my parents wedding in some way to make hers I was super excited. It was an opportunity to use materials that are no longer made, it also incorporates a memory and adds sentimental value to the piece.

Taking that first cut was quite daunting but once started I was well on my way to transforming the hat into something brand new and giving it a modern twist.

It didn't take long before the shape and style started to come together. The colour of the orginal hat matched perfectly with mum's dress, so I decided to continue to stick with pink and soft pinks.

It was a very special occasion that my mum wore this hat, it was my sister’s wedding. I was really pleased with the final piece and so was mum, I really hope granny would have liked it too.

If you have an old hat or some sentimental items of jewellery that you would like adding to a commissioned piece then don't hesitate to ask.

As you can clearly see it's pretty amazing what can be upcycled.
